Cohortes

How to run the Selfield  Game of Good Encounters.

The game runs 20 trials in Formals sessions, and a number of your choice in practice sessions. During the game, feel for the "right moments" that will bring encounters.

Each "trial" is has two steps:

1. Call the blue sphere to come to you, by typing the computer spacebar once.

2. Typing the spacebar again "opens" the blue sphere. If the sphere reveals an encounter, it will show you who you meet.

3. If there is no encounter, the sphere will just dissolve.

4. At the end of the session, a message appears. Then wait a minute and reflect while the system closes...

What does the Selfield game do?

The Good Encounters game probes psychic connections between the present and the future. It is only after you click to "open" the sphere, that the computer makes a purely random choice as to whether an encounter is presented, or not. Without a psi effect, encounters would appear 50% of the time. But with psi, we find that results deviate from 50%. It is like guessing the outcome of a coin toss. You make a guess for a future outcome; if you consistently  guess correctly more than half the time, that shows that there is a connection between your guess and the future tosses. It is this kind of mysterious present-future connection that Psi@Home tries to track with data from the Selfield application.

These psi effects are difficult to produce. One explanation is that human psychology is susceptible to distractions, boredom and frustrations. All of these can undermine our ability to tune into intuitions and feelings that lie at the core of psi functioning – this is one working hypothesis of the Psi@Home project. Indeed, users often report that the hope and fear of succeeding or failing to get encounters interferes with playing the game. The Selfield game is designed to lessen these reactions of hope/fear, boredom, etc. by employing a playful and engaging interface.

Tips for doing sessions.

There is no one-size-fits all for producing psi. Here are some pointers drawn from the users' experience as well as from the parapsychological literature and lore.

In a word, one's attitude and mindset are key.

These thoughts can be helpful for each session :

1. Know that psi happens. Reams of data confirm this. So at the start of a session, recall this fact.

2. Know that you can do it. A session may be "successful" or not, but you can do it. So at the start of a session, recall that this is so.

3. Have a sense of humor. Enjoy the game. Don't try too hard.

4. Take your time.

5. Do it your way. Start fresh for each trial.

6. Know that you are making a contribution to Science. It's a human exploration that matters and you play a part.
